PROFES 2011 - Doctoral Symposium
Torre Canne (Br), Italy, June 20, 2011
Part of the 12th International Conference on Product Focused Software Development and Process Improvement (PROFES 2011)

The 2011 PROFES - Doctoral Symposium provides a forum for both early and late-stage PhD students, working on foundations, techniques, methods and tools in the area of software process and product quality improvement, to present their research and get detailed feedback and advice. It will provide PhD students with an opportunity to present and to discuss their research with experienced researchers in a constructive and friendly atmosphere. The main objectives of this event are to:

  1. Provide a forum whereby students receive constructive feedback from other researchers on their research and guidance on future directions.
  2. Provide students with a forum for building a network of other PhD students as well as with more senior researchers.
  3. Assist PhD students to practice writing clearly and to effectively present their research proposal.
  4. Assist students in the selection of an adequate research methodology for their PhD work.
  5. Build bridges for potential research collaboration(s).
  6. Contribute to the PROFES 2011 conference goals.

The Doctoral Symposium has the same scope of technical topics as the main PROFES conference (http://serlab.di.uniba.it/profes2011), which include, but not restricted to, the following:

  • Software Development Processes for Managing Diversity (COTS, OSS and SPL Development);
  • Process Patterns;
  • Estimation and Calibration Techniques for Managing Diversity;
  • Agile and Lean Processes;
  • Systems and Software Quality;
  • Parametric and Goal Oriented Quality Models;
  • Project management techniques;
  • Cloud computing;
  • Service Orientation;
  • Service Engineering Processes;
  • Software Process Improvement (SPI) for Quality Products and Services in Changing Environments;
  • SPI in Different Areas and Contexts;
  • Challenges in Managing Product and Process Diversity in the Global Markets;
  • Evidence-Based Software Engineering;
  • Empirical Studies;
  • Industrial Experiences and Case Studies;
  • Process Modelling, Management and Assessment in different or changing environments;
  • Flexible Software Business Models.

Feedback to students will be provided by experienced members of the software engineering community. In addition, further feedback will also be given by other young researchers, to facilitate the exchange of ideas among young researchers.

Submissions and Evaluation

To participate, please submit a research proposal of no more than 6 pages, formatted according to ACM formatting guidelines, by e-mail to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Research proposals should include the following information:

  • Title
  • Your name and contact information
  • Your supervisor’s name and contact information
  • Abstract
  • Research area and sub-area of your work
  • What is the problem?
  • What is the significance of this problem?
  • Brief literature review, and how the proposed research fits in within existing research in the field
  • Description of proposed research methodology
  • Results achieved so far (if any)
  • The expected contributions of your research

In addition, you also need to ask your supervisor to submit a Letter of Support by email to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . This letter must also be submitted by the same deadline used for research proposals. This letter should include an assessment of the current status of your research and an expected date for completion.

Reviewing criteria

Submissions will be assessed by the Committee, using as basis the following criteria:

  • Quality of the research proposal, which should include a clear and concise statement of the research questions or problem being addressed, and its importance
  • Discussion about related work, and how your research will contribute to the field
  • Relevance of your submission to the symposium using as basis the symposium’s technical topics
  • Quality of the references cited
  • Quality of the presentation
  • Quality of the support letter written by your main supervisor.

The committee will take into account students’ current research stages when assessing their submissions.

Presentation and publication of research proposals

Students are expected to give an oral presentation of their research proposals during the Symposium. In addition, accepted proposals will be included in Volume II Proceedings containing a ISBN number (ACM Format). Registration at the symposium is mandatory in order for accepted proposals to be included in the Proceedings.
